The Jazz Ensemble is an inclusive big band that fosters self-reliance and collective music making. The band is comprised of saxophones, trumpets, trombones and a full rhythm section including electric and acoustic bass, guitar, vibraphone, piano, keyboards, drums and percussion. We also feature vocalists with the band. The band performs in a wide variety of styles from both classic and modern literature, including swing, Latin, funk, ballads and rock. Audition Required

The Jazz Combos focus upon classic and modern jazz in the small group setting. Dynamic interplay and improvisation are explored, while repertoire is based upon the styles and bands of past masters such as Horace Silver, Miles Davis, Art Blakey and Thelonious Monk. Student compositions and arrangements are encouraged. Audition Required

Jazz Theory and Improvisation I and II. Jazz Theory and Improvisation I and II offers two levels for jazz and popular music theory. Chords, scales, groove, repertoire and much more are covered in the context of spontaneous and creative improvisation. Each week consists of theoretical concepts and their practical application in live performance.

Vocal Jazz. The Vocal Jazz Ensemble course at DVC, divides great jazz, pop, R&B, gospel and rock singers into smaller musical ensembles. These groups perform at least twice a semester on campus as well as touring throughout the Bay area. The groups have also performed on many California Jazz Festivals over the past 10 years. The singers work in male, female, and mixed groups often accompanied by a jazz combo or big band. There are also a great deal of unaccompanied singing, scatting and solos for each individual. Audition required
